WILFORD PENROYLD 47,   a British Executive Editor transfered to American Educational Books Publisher, brings his children up in the Mid-West. 
 
ROMEL BRINWALD 57      the earlier American Editor-in-Chief of Scott Foresman Corporation. Later, found associated with a Foreign Organization involved in a takeover.

ABEL PENROYLD 18,      oldest son who has the courage to communicate his ideas in any situation.         Becomes a proteg´e to a worldly acclaimed Scholar by choice of voice.

MAE PENROYLD 45,       mother of four, who has an outstanding knack for administrative work. She defends family issues and turns the school board around in social matters.    

ADELINE PENROYLD 17,   daughter with congenial skills and a prudent nature.  Sometimes off color.

ALDOUS PENROYLD 13,    son has a good head for statistics and is an enterprizing young man.

DELPHI PENROYLD 10,    youngest son, uncontrollably energetic youth with a competitive edge.

JOLIE CAEDMON 18,      a girlfriend first-rate of Abel's who is responsive, emotional, plus intellectual.  Becomes a close advocate in matters of the heart.
 BENTLEY HUGHEN 68,     a professor of Ancient Intellect and Modern Scholarship who becomes  instrumental in turning around a few fiascos when Abel turns to him.

SIEGFRIED SPARSIONES 48, an author of novels, lecturer and president of an Eagaltarian Society. His participation in a debate reveals the impact of his undoing.

PENELOPE ARTEMUS 38,    an essayist/substitute teacher who is hired on by others under Siegfried.  She manages to take advantage of Benedict's absence by misreprsentation.

CLIVE OSAGE 47,  Dean of Philosophy at Karl G. Maesser University who conducts the debate and investigates why Professor Hughen's entire class must verify's Abel's claim about a scheme to oust the Prof. And get his job.

[incedental characters from flashback sequences limited, yet, essential dialogue] ADRIAN DESCARTES 30, a High School Philosophy teacher who's rational sense introduces Abel to be organized and less contrained in his choices toward a poductive life. WINAMELLA DORIA 62,     a Music Historian/teacher who is stuck in the past by her self-serving teaching methods.  None of her pupils are left with a feel for music. WINIFRED HOLST 59,      a Music Professor who inspires Abel's outlook to a full spectrum.
